About Sykesville, Maryland
Sykesville is a small town in Carroll County, Maryland. The town lies 20 miles west of Baltimore and 40 miles north of Washington, D.C. The population was 4,436 at the 2010 census. BudgetTravel.com named Sykesville ‘Coolest Small Town in America’ in June 2016.
The land on which Sykesville sits started out as part of the 3,000-acre Springfield Estate, a slave plantation owned by wealthy Baltimore shipbuilder William Patterson. In 1803, Patterson’s daughter Elizabeth married Napoléon Bonaparte’s younger brother Jerome, but when she arrived in Europe as Jerome’s bride, Napoléon refused to let Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte set foot on land. He was determined that Jerome marry into royalty and sent Elizabeth back home. Napoléon refused to recognize the marriage of the two and and after he became emperor he annulled it by a French imperial decree. Denied by Napoléon, she was never able to see her husband again. Upon the death of William Patterson in 1824, his son George inherited the estate. In 1825, George Patterson sold 1,000 acres of Springfield Estate to his friend and business associate, James Sykes.
By the late 1800s, many Europeans (predominantly from Germany and Scotland) had settled in Sykesville in pursuit of farming and mining. The town was incorporated in 1904. A weekly newspaper, the Sykesville Herald, was founded in 1913 and published regularly until the 1980s.
Sykesville, MD, has a little something for everyone. It’s adjacent to the McKeldin Recreation Area, which means fishermen, horseback riders, disc golfers, hikers, and anyone who enjoys outdoor activities will always find something to do. Its proximity to the Hugg Thomas Wildlife Management Area also provides options for those who enjoy watching wildlife in its natural habitat. The Sykesville Farmers Market runs between June and October, but taking the Main Street Walking Tour is something residents enjoy all year long.
