Using the Wrong Framing Material for the Conditions

Not all framing materials perform the same way, and choosing the wrong one for your site conditions creates problems that show up within a few years.

Standard pressure-treated wood is the most common choice and works well for most residential applications. But in situations with high moisture exposure, heavy load requirements, or long spans, upgraded materials make a significant difference.

Beams and posts carry the accumulated weight from the joists above and transfer it to the footings below. When beams are undersized or posts are too thin for the load, the deck settles unevenly, sags in the middle, and puts stress on connections that were not designed to handle lateral forces.

Beam sizing depends on the span between posts, the joist spacing, and the total load the deck will carry. Decks with hot tubs, outdoor kitchens, or heavy stone features need beams and posts sized specifically for those additional loads.

Inadequate or Missing Footings

Every deck post needs a footing that distributes the load into the ground. When footings are too shallow, too small, or missing entirely, the posts settle into the soil and the deck shifts.

All framing materials expand and contract with temperature changes. If the deck framing does not allow for this movement, boards buckle, fasteners pop, and connections loosen.

Steel and aluminum framing have different expansion rates than wood, and the connection hardware must accommodate that difference. Composite framing requires specific fastening methods that allow for seasonal movement without losing structural integrity.
