About Monrovia, Maryland
Monrovia is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located in Frederick County, Maryland, with a population of 2,702 as of the 2020 census. Despite its modest size, Monrovia has a rich history that traces back to the early 19th century.
Although a post office was established on January 15, 1833, it is unclear if the area was officially called Monrovia at that time. In the 1820s, it was known as “Hall Towne,” likely named after Nicholas Hall, a founder of nearby New Market. The exact date when the name Monrovia was adopted remains a mystery.
Monrovia’s development was closely tied to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which established a station there in 1831. The station served as a critical link for the region’s mills and provided travelers with access to New Market, Maryland. In 1840, a watering station for trains was added, further cementing Monrovia’s role as a transportation hub. By 1880, it had become the largest community in the New Market election district.
Economic changes in the early 20th century reshaped Monrovia. The Monrovia Central Trust Bank closed in 1929, and the Great Depression led to the closure of its largest employers, including a prominent cannery and the Nicodemus Mill, in the 1930s. Despite these setbacks, Monrovia’s historical significance and small-town charm continue to define its character today.
