About Urbana, Maryland
Urbana is a suburban census-designated place (CDP) in Frederick County, Maryland. Located at the I-270/MD 80 interchange, it is approximately 7.5 miles southeast of Frederick and about 37 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Urbana had a population of 13,304, reflecting significant growth from the 2010 Census, which recorded 9,175 residents. Despite its rapid development, Urbana has not been incorporated as a town or city. It operates under the governance of Frederick County, with no official mayor or city council.
Urbana is steeped in history, with landmarks like Landon House, originally built in 1754 along the Rappahannock River near Fredericksburg, Virginia. Moved to Urbana in 1840 by boat and oxcart, the house has served various roles, including a seminary for girls, a military academy, and a Civil War hospital. Another historic site, Zion Episcopal Church, built in 1802, was badly damaged by fire in 1961 but was restored to its original condition as a museum in 2005.
Urbana is also home to the Fannie Mae Urbana Technology Center, a key facility supporting Fannie Mae’s technology operations. Completed in 2005, this facility encompasses approximately 220,000 to 247,000 square feet, including advanced data center space, infrastructure support, and office facilities. Notably, the Urbana Technology Center was the first data center to achieve LEED certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program, setting a precedent for sustainable design in mission-critical facilities.
Today, Urbana is known for its family-friendly atmosphere, offering a variety of walking trails, parks, and green spaces that connect neighborhoods and make it easy to explore on foot. The Urbana Regional Library and Urbana District Park provide recreational and cultural opportunities, while the community’s close-knit feel is enhanced by local events and farmer’s markets.
